Dial and Hands
The watch features a classic silver dial with a subtle sunburst finish that radiates outward from the center. It is adorned with applied, faceted baton indices featuring black inserts that provide excellent legibility, matched by the applied Omega logo at twelve o’clock. The dial layout includes a framed date aperture at three o’clock and black printed text indicating « Genève » and « T SWISS MADE T ». The baton hands carry matching black inserts. In assessing condition, the dial presents clear evidence of its vintage nature; there are visible surface marks, most notably a distinct angled scratch near the ten o’clock region, alongside scattered spotting and patination across the finish.
Case and Crystal
The 35mm stainless steel case features a classic profile with straight lugs and a smooth, polished bezel. The case geometry transitions from brushed sides to polished lug tops, offering a dynamic visual presence on the wrist. The watch is fitted with an Omega-signed crown featuring a distinct scalloped edge. The caseback is a solid screw-down type, engraved with « WATERPROOF » on the exterior and bearing the correct Omega hallmarks, reference number 166.070, and « ACIER INOXYDABLE » text on the interior. The case exhibits normal vintage wear, displaying various surface scratches, scuffs, and softening of the edges that speak to its life as a daily worn timepiece. It is topped with a domed acrylic crystal that impressively retains the tiny, original Omega logo etched directly into its center, though the crystal itself shows minor superficial surface wear.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the venerable Omega Caliber 565, an automatic movement renowned for its durability and precision. Visual inspection reveals the signature Omega copper-gilt finish across the bridges and the rotor, which is prominently stamped with « OMEGA WATCH Co SWISS » and « TWENTY-FOUR 24 JEWELS ». The caliber designation 565 and the serial number 31482014 are clearly stamped and visible on the movement plates. The movement presents exceptionally well visually, remaining clean and vibrant. Timegrapher results reflect current performance; the movement is running and operational (see timegrapher: -22 to -25 s/day).
Strap
The watch is paired with a period correct style black textured leather strap. It features prominent white contrast stitching that perfectly complements the monochrome aesthetic of the dial and case, and it is secured with a standard stainless steel pin buckle.
Condition
This Omega Genève is presented in good vintage condition. It is a watch that has been visibly worn and enjoyed, which is reflected in the noticeable scratch and spotting on the dial, as well as the standard surface scratches and wear across the stainless steel case and bezel. Despite these cosmetic signs of age, the watch retains a very strong vintage character, supported by an exceptionally clean and highly respected automatic movement and the charming detail of the original signed crystal.
Dimensions
The stainless steel case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the signed crown, offering a classic and universally wearable mid-century profile.
Remarks
This reference 166.070 is a transparent and honest example of Omega’s reliable 1970s output. It does not hide its age, wearing its patina and marks as a testament to its history, yet it remains functionally robust thanks to the excellent caliber 565 within. It is a highly versatile piece that seamlessly bridges the gap between casual and formal wear.
History
Introduced in 1953, the Genève name was initially applied to a high-end line of Omega watches to pay tribute to the brand’s master watchmakers working at the brand’s facilities in Geneva, where their most exacting and demanding models were created. By the late 1960s and 1970s, the Genève line evolved into a comprehensive collection that represented Omega’s core values: providing exceptionally well-made, reliable, and stylish watches for a broad audience. They often utilized the exact same high-grade movements found in the Seamaster and Constellation lines, packaged in more streamlined, contemporary case designs.
