(*) Joan Miró (1893-1983) was born in Barcelona, where he grew up and began his artistic studies. He went to the La Llotja academy against the wishes of his parents, who wanted him to work in a more traditional way. Later, he studied at the Escola d'Art de Francesc Galí and met the Fauves and the Cubists.
His emotional landscapes, which shaped him as a person and an artist, were primarily Mont-roig, Paris, Majorca, and later New York and Japan. Mont-roig, a small town in the Baix Camp region, served as a counterpoint to the intellectual ferment he experienced in Paris, where he settled in the 1920s alongside Surrealist poets and the most creative artists of his time. There, he met Arp, Magritte, Brancusi, and Giacometti, and exhibited with Dalí, Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim, and Max Ernst in several exhibitions on Dadaism and Surrealism.
The inspiration of abstract expressionism was revealed to him in New York in the 1940s. Later, in 1956, in the midst of World War II, Joan Miró left his exile in France and settled in Palma de Mallorca, a place of refuge and work, where his friend Josep Lluís Sert designed the studio he had always dreamed of. There, he concentrated on working with sculptures and ceramics until his death in 1983.
His deep roots in the landscape of Mont-roig, and later Mallorca, would prove decisive in his work. His connection to the land and his interest in everyday objects and the natural environment would form the backdrop to some of his technical and formal explorations. Miró shunned academicism, constantly striving for a comprehensive and pure body of work, without adhering to any defined movement. Present in both form and public expression, it was through his art that Joan Miró demonstrated his rebellion and profound sensitivity to the political and social events around him. This interplay of forces led him to create a unique and highly personal artistic language, placing him among the most influential artists of the 20th century.
(**) “Speaking Alone” represents a particularly effective collaboration between the artist and the author. Miró’s brilliantly spontaneous and amorphous images, drawn directly on the stone with very few preparatory sketches, have the inventive momentum of Tzara’s random verses.
The original edition was produced by Maeght Éditeur and consists of 72 original lithographs by Miró, 49 of them in color, including 18 full-page plates.
