Antique Northern Afghan Tribal Rug – Afghanistan, Circa Late 19th Century

An exceptional and highly collectible Northern Afghan tribal rug, handwoven more than 120 years ago, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900). This rare antique textile embodies the rich weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan, where tribal artisans created rugs distinguished by their powerful geometric symbolism and enduring craftsmanship.

The rug features a striking architectural composition with stylized Tree of Life motifs arranged across a deep madder-red field. The elegant design is framed by multiple geometric borders, creating a harmonious balance between simplicity and tribal sophistication. Its warm palette of deep reds, burgundy tones, ivory highlights, and dark brown accents has developed a beautiful natural patina through more than a century of age.

Hand-knotted from hand-spun wool and colored with traditional natural dyes, this piece possesses the character, authenticity, and visual depth that collectors seek in genuine antique Afghan rugs. The symbolic motifs represent growth, protection, continuity, and spiritual connection, themes commonly found in the oldest tribal weavings of the region.
